They are different skills, with different wording, but there must be something I am missing because I don't quite understand the difference between them. If you could explain it I would appreciate that.

Re: Deflect VS. Dodge
Deflect works on attacks considered "Special" attacks in addition to regular attacks. Dodge works on standard melee attacks only.
Attacks that are considered "Special" will say so in their description.

Re: Deflect VS. Dodge
The wording of dodge states "and all effects associated with that attack."
I thought all in all attacks that did more than just damage were special attacks.
I am not as well versed in the rules yet as id like to be, so maybe let me do it this way.
Can you give me some examples of things that are or are not stopped by dodge and deflect?
Im guessing the difference between parry and dodge is dodge will stop surprise attacks? And because of the wording of parry and dodge does that mean unless the defense description states other wise, a defense will not stop a surprise attack unless stated?
On the whole are surprise attacks "special attacks"?
And on the whole are special attacks generally more powerful than non special attacks? I ask because dodge is higher level and more expensive than deflect.

Also just to be clear, attack never means spells right? Attack infers a physical attack, not an over encompassing term for anything offensive.

Re: Deflect VS. Dodge
Correct. No Dodging spells and NEVER area effects!
