    Some questions

Post by Warrior on Sat Sep 21, 2013 7:03 am

Can you buy both weapon profs and ranged profs for the ranged weapons sphere? Please say yes, ranged weapons are never good enough.

When if ever will the higher level skills be released online? It's hard to plan a character if you don't know if the class you are choosing will turn out to be the one that will provide you with the most fun down the road.

Do you have a reroll policy for new characters in a character's first few months if a person tries something new and it doesn't work out? Especially for makeup races?

Do you envision many people in the future fighting master florentine with advanced lists? Or do you have a vision of seeing many people fighting with many different fighting styles? In previous larps I have attended the players either all used master florentine or weapon and shield, I would find it interesting to see diversity.

    How is health gained?
--do the different classes gain different health amounts?

If a player only attends saturday and pays the reduced rate, do they still get the full blanket amount of xp? I have a controlling work schedule....

No, Each Prof is for a particular sphere and the two cannot be mixed. Bows do deal direct body as opposed to normal damage. That mixed with some of the profs and buff that can be had in game, Bows should be powerful enough. Thrown weapons admittedly do not have the impact bows do and are therefore a less power.

There is some debate as to keeping them secret or releasing them by rank after players in game have achieved that rank. I can say there is nothing on those lists that strays from or operates outside the flavor and concepts given to the players already. Dragoons are portrayed as units of martial combat fighters and Druids are told they can meld into animals. The Advanced skills will allow PCs to do just that. So if they are released, it will not be until they are unlocked in game.

Yes we allow a 1 event free re-do of a character. Class, race, or both...players choice.

Very few Classes have access to Master Florentine or Shield and these have not been put on a common list for just such a reason. We want variety. We want players to feel "special", but it's hard to do that when everybody is the same.

Health is gained differently by class/per level. There is a chart in the rule book. I believe ballpark numbers are Melee classes get 1 per level, Casters get 2 every 4 and tweenies get 2 every 3. In reality, what will be of far greater importance is the buffs you carry into combat. Many of the buffs especially the higher level buffs, really make a huge impact on survive-ability.

And sorry but have event/half build. You still get full RP and SP conversions though.

    Thanks for the Questions.

It does say that for druids and Dragoons, but no one else. Except maybe blood knights if their advanced list is their blood rites, but even then I have no idea what they do.

And it isn't just about being able to plan your character on paper, which is something most players like to do.

It is also being able to plan logistically.

For example, if my advanced list gets chain armor, and I spend 3-500 dollars on a good suit of leather only to find out I get chain, that hurts.

I buy a 250 dollar latex two hander off a website only to find out my advanced list gets master florentine.

    Etc.....

And it is possible one of the lists is a paladin esque gets heals in their advanced list type class. I would be uber annoyed if looking at the base rules I saw no class like that, so I go ancestral, and pay for large sphere, have no physical defenses, horrible HP and try to play it like a paladin only to find out one of the fighter lists essentially becomes a paladial type character in their advanced list.

Down the road it can have an enormous impact, and if people are driving as far as they drive, and dishing out the 45 bucks a month, donations, NPCing shifts, working in the kitchen etc... my personal opinion is they should know what they are spending their money on.

Now those are all OOG points.

There is one IG point I still would like to make.

We were told from a lore stand point all things on all different planets advanced in the exact same way.

If that is true, this stuff has been around anywhere from milennia to centuries, Look at how old our real planet is, billions of years.

That being said, if a guardian is a guardian, and a elementalist is an elementalist etc... and we as the PCs range in age from 18- 50+ how have we not encountered this information or seen these people "doing their thing."

If all our worlds are being torn asunder, and we are allowed to write the story of our world up I imagine in quite a few of them it is going to be a battle between good and evil, and you are going to see these people toe to toe on the front lines using all of their abilities.

That being said, I personally advocate getting to see everything you are getting into.

This game seems to base itself around lost lore and the unknown. So that is cool.

If you dont want to post the entire list, I think at the least each list should get 3-4 sentences about its advanced list so people know what they are getting into.

Your reroll policy covers the first event. Unless you extend that to getting a potential second reroll if you find out about your higher list and hate it, the information should be out there. And for players financial reasons, those paragraphs should absolutely obtain potential to gain new weapon or armor profs.

We have made a deliberate choice to maintain a sense of the unknown at Beyond the Veil. We acknowledge that this rule system, and it's hidden lists, may not appeal to certain players. But we are confident that it will appeal to others. We are also confident that there in enough information on the classes that players should have an idea of what their advanced list will be all about. That being said, perhaps we can afford even more clarity when giving our class overviews and we will certainly discuss that in our next work session.

We really appreciate all of the input and support everyone has given us. We hope we can reward you with an amazing LARP.

You had mentioned releasing the stuff as it is released.

On a separate point other than knowing what you are getting into, I highly recommend this for one important reason.

    Fluidity of combat.

If tons of skills exist that no one knows what they do, combat will constantly be halted for explanations.

Releasing it as it comes out prevents that from happening while still maintaining the hidden lore aspect.

    Some futher questions.

After reading your section in the rulebook about buff stacking, I am a little confused.

It says I can have a bunch of spells on a location, just not with the same keyword. But your keywords listed are the lecation, example: body.

So, can you have an armor buff and spell buff both on your body?

    Different topic. Archery.

Arrows doing body is cool, but in my experience, most npcs do not have armor. Also, with an arrow doing only 2 base, I feel it is really weak. Is there a ranged hidden list? There are not a lot of damage options for archers. I'd like to know if archers will be capable of doing decent damage, because its such a hard style of fighting to use, considering the cost of arrows and the rate in which they can be fired.

Also, is there a point blank policy? Unloading an arrow at someone close range is an easy way to leave welts.

Ranged profs. They say thrown weapons OR ranged weapons. Its the only prof that benefits a single weapon instead a whole sphere like the others. Was this intended?

Also, do strength bonuses affect thrown weapons? I don't see anything saying it wouldn't, which makes sense, but I was just checking.

From back to front: Strength modifies Thrown but not Bow.

Yes it was intended to split the ranged list.

There is a point blank policy. You load an arrow without nocking it. Pull the arrow back, without the
string, letting the arrow fall to the ground. call point Blank and your damage. Usable inside 15 feet.

Decent damage is subjective so I'm going to say "Yes".

No, you may essentially have a body, mind, weapon, shield, & armor at one time, but not two armors...for starters.

Demonologists, Rogues, are tweenies. (sorry about not explaining that better.)

After looking through all the spell lists, none of the spells have an armor or mind keyword. Only the runeblade list has a few armor runes. Are runes the same things as spells, or can I have an armor rune and an armor spell?

Can you have an armor spell (keyword: body)on your body and a spell defense buff (keyword: body) on your body at the same time?

Or, to use druid as an example: can you have both aspect of the turtle and bear's strength cast on you at the same time?

Aspect of the turtle's keyword is body and so is bear strength's, but one is an armor spell and the other isn't.

You may call defenses if stunned only if it is a magical defense that reads "next whatever". So if a defense protects me from the next elemental attack and I get stunned by a non elemental attack and then, while stunned, get hit with an elemental attack, the spell defense would trigger. But I would not come out of the stun if the effect prevented all damage from being done, until the complete duration is past.

Rune Blade is not a tweenie. They are skilled and conditioned swordsmen & women.

The stun skill reads "immobilized". Is it a root or complete paralysis?

What stops a stun? Special attack defenses?

    ---------------------
Also, I am still a bit confused about spell defenses myself.

If it works the way I think it works, it is a huge advantage to fighter classes who can get physical defenses off their list, so taking the spell defense is a no brainer.

Casting classes however have to choose between a spell that gives armor points, a spell that stops a physical skill, or a spell that stops another spell.

I doubt a whole lot of buffs will be going out the first event, but if you could clarify exactly how buffs work maybe give some examples that would be great.

    ----------------

Curious. What is the reasoning for str not working on bows but working on thrown weapons? Bow already only do 2 damage (yes technically body but I don't see that being a huge advantage) they are one of if not the most expensive larp weapons to get, and maintain. Strings, quiver, arrows costing 15-20 dollars a pop. It is the bulkiest thing to carry around, and extremely detrimental if someone "rushes" you.
It also has limited ammunition and you have to spend a lot of time picking up arrows off the ground or finding them in the woods. It is also the slowest to strike weapon.

I dont get why it would be the only weapon in the game not effected by strength. Logic dictates that if you are stronger, you can draw the bow further and it will strike harder. Its why I can't elk hunt with my larp bow, it would probably ding off the elks hide, he would lol at me and run away. But if I was too weak to pull back a more taught bow... In DnD there are special bows, not sure how items or crafting work in this game but even that as possibility would be better than str simply not working.

And by that logic, I don't understand why ranged profs are the only prof to not effect their entire sphere. Again, not the most powerful weapons in the game. They require upkeep, are often lost, you cannot strike in melee with them, and thus also cannot defend yourself.

Making a decent arrow or thrown weapon takes a lot of time and money, unlike a spell packet. So when you lose one, it sucks to have to go home after the weekend and make a bunch more. Unlike a regular boffer or latex melee weapon which you get and can last a long time (i have some ten year old weapons that are still safe).

I would think they would get buffed, not nerfed.

As far as bows doing body. Its a nice advantage and all. Assuming you get into a PC on PC fight, chances are you cant get enough arrows off to take all their body away, so if they have armor, you will end up having to chip away at it with thrown weapons (which wont receive the benefit of your profs unless that changes) or a side arm sword.

With NPCs, again even if they have armor, see above scenario. OR you are hitting them for direct body while all your companions are hitting at their armor. Assuming NPCs come out with armor.

So the fact they are the only weapon that does body is nice, considering all the drawbacks of the weapon, not sure it is really enough to have them hitting for two.

In a typical scenario of someone "noticing the archer" he will probably get off one regular shot, and one point blank shot as per the rules, and which point he will have to switch to thrown, or to a side arm. Either of which if they are profed means the character doesnt have build spent into much else.

If the target doesn't go down, they are about to get faced with someone who if they have a two hander, 3 profs and str is swinging 8s. Now the archer is trying to defend themselves with an unweildly bow in one hand (dropping it on the ground is not an option as expensive as they are, not to mention if they get a crack and it goes unnoticed that is bad news bears) and thrown weapons or a sword in the other while the person who bridged the gap on them is just beating away with their unlimited ammo melee weapon.

Dont get me wrong, I understand Archery is one of those things that you love or you hate, and if you are doing it your probably dont care about your power level, you are doing it because you think it is cool or fun.
That being said it doesnt mean it should be underpowered, and I still think you should consider...

-upping the damage of bows, or allowing the archer to choose between 2 body OR 4 damage.
-Make ranged prof effect thrown and bow since they are in the same sphere. This gives synergy between ranged weapons and gives you something worth while to do once a person enters point blank range.
    -make str effect bows

    ----------------
One thing that wasn't addressed and its a safety issue and I dont want to assume so please answer this as it went unanswered in another thread.

Am I correct in saying it is under no circumstances EVER ok for an attacker to strike an archers bow? And under the same token it is never ok to block an attack with a bow?
String snaps can be uber dangerous for both the attacker and the wielder, so I just want to be certain this is super illegal in combat.

    ----------------
In regards to the point blank rule, what if the arrow is knocked and drawn and the person rushes you and gets within the 15 feet? Can you call point blank damage and then fire the arrow at another target?

Just so I am clear.  If a person takes a stun, then a break limb, he cannot call deflect on the break limb?

Also, stun is not listed as a special attack. Does that make it a basic attack? How would it work with riposte?

Unrelated question, does the 1, 500 starting xp count towards total level?

I'm sorry. I thought I responded to that.

Yes. It is NEVER OK to hit a bow or Block with a bow.

No. You may not shoot at someone else. If you have an arrow nocked and drawn, you must either find a way to release the tension without firing the arrow, dropping it to the ground, or engage the other target. you may not do both with one arrow.

That is correct Warrior. You cannot deflect while in the effects of a stun.

A Riposte negates the attack and returns numerical damage. The numerical value would be zero but it would negate the stun.

And No the starting does not count toward your level.

I noticed medium weapon on dragoon is the same price as it is on the common list. Is this a typo?

Surprising that the backbone of armies learns a primary weapon skill as easily as a farmer or sorcerer. Very Happy

Stacking refers to applying multiple magical effects to a target. For a full write up of the Stacking rules, pleas refer to the latest rule book.

In short, you cannot have 2 effects on the same target area with the same Keyword. For example: you may not enchant a weapon with 2 skills that grant the keyword 'weapon'.
